About Marinda

The Musician

My journey with the khim began when I was just six years old, and ever since, traditional Thai music has held a special place in my heart. My name is Marinda, and I am a 17-year-old student based in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Having played the khim for over ten years, I have developed a deep appreciation for its beautiful melodies and cultural significance. Through my performances, I hope to share the charm of Thai music and bring a little piece of Thai culture to every occasion.

The Instrument

The Khim

The khim is a traditional Thai musical instrument that originated from China, where it was known as the yangqin. It was introduced to Thailand during the Ayutthaya period through cultural exchange and trade with China. With its unique trapezoid shape and beautiful, shimmering sound, the khim is played by gently striking its metal strings with two small bamboo mallets. What makes it special is its ability to create melodies that sound both delicate and lively, making it a wonderful instrument to experience live.

The Story Behind Lao Duang Duean

Lao Duang Duean is a famous traditional Thai song composed by Prince Pitsanulok Prachanat. The song is associated with a touching story of unfulfilled love and longing.

According to the widely told story, the prince fell in love with Princess Chomchuen of Chiang Mai, but their love could not be fulfilled due to family and social circumstances. Heartbroken, he expressed his feelings through music, creating a melody filled with tenderness, sadness, and deep affection.

The song's beautiful melody and heartfelt emotions have made it one of Thailand's most beloved traditional compositions. When played on the khim, its delicate, shimmering sound brings out the song's gentle beauty and sense of nostalgia.
